Poppies made a it a Passion to support locally produced products even before we opened our doors. It has been an ongoing effort to find these special people that have made a commitment to the land, their heritage and lifestyles. As farmers and small producers, they work harder to provide us with wholesome foods.

We are proud to offer local, pasture raised and grain finished beef from right here in Transylvania County from Busy Bee Farms. Brittany Whitmire and Andy Von Canon are continuing a farming tradition on Whitmire family land that has been farmed for over a century. Nearby, Everett Farms is raising Angus beef in a sustainable way and providing our customers with a delicious product. We also carry a regional favorite, Carolina Bison. The farmers raise heritage bison near Leicester, NC, and the animals are completely grass-fed and always antibiotic free. Grass-fed bison is lean by nature, making it one of the healthiest red meats one can enjoy while never lacking in flavor.

In our freezer case, find ground beef and sausage from Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fariview and Farside Farm in Asheville. (from whom we also get our fresh, cage free eggs)

New to the meat case are two more local beef producers; Brasstown Beef, a 1000 acre farm producing a dry-aged product we're sure you will love. From over in Flat Rock, we are also selling registered Angus beef from Three Arrows Cattle Company. We encourage you to visit these companies web sites to learn more about their passion of producing quality meat the right way.

Beyond our local offering, we work with outstanding meat producers bringing you the best tasting, freshest and most wholesome meat available. Case-ready is not in our vocabulary. We do everything the old fashioned way: actual butchers cutting, grinding, and preparing all of the meat and specialty items in the shop.

We do not use imported meats and our focus on quality is second-to-none. Once you try our upper 2/3's choice beef, you'll never go back to commodity steaks again. Whether you are seeking the perfect steak for the grill or skillet, or a delectable roast for the weekend, our team of enthusiastic young butchers is always happy to recommend the perfect solution for your culinary desires.

Our full service meat department is dedicated to satisfying your request. Poppies has made a commitment to source locally produced meat products whenever possible that are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones.

Our poultry selection features all-natural FreeBird Chicken and Plainville Farms Turkey. These companies raise animals on family farms, using no antibiotics and feeding them an all vegetarian diet. There is no comparison to the commodity brands out there whose definition of "all-natural" only means it is minimally processed.

We are also pleased to offer Niman Ranch pork when available, including a help-yourself display of their most delicious bacon, hams, sausages, and other specialty products. Niman Ranch uses only certified humane and naturally-raised pork, and their standards of natural meats historically raised the bar for the entire industry.

We keep a good variety of lamb cuts stocked from the farms in Australia and most recently, right here in Transylvania Co from Everett Farm. We will cut to order any of your chops, leg roasts, shoulder, stew, or kabobs!

If we do not have an item displayed in our case, we will be happy to special order it for you. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience when shopping at our meat counter.

SEAFOOD
By receiving deliveries from several suppliers, our prices and quality of your favorite finfish, shellfish, and any other aquatic special orders are always competitive. From sustainably raised farmed and wild salmon cut to order, to shrimp steamed in-house and ready-to-eat, we are mostly interested in finding what you are looking for. For special orders of any size, we usually only need a couple of days’ notice and will always consult you with pricing and origin, or any other concerns you may have.

We are proud to support our friends only a county away in Hendersonville at Bluewater Seafood, who provide us with the bulk of our fresh fish and shellfish. We believe in keeping business as local as possible and are fortunate to have a top-notch distributor in the neighborhood. One of our favorites in the seafood counter is the 98% organic trout from the Shining Rock Wilderness at Sunburst Trout Company. World renowned for their caviar, smoked trout and enduring quality, Sunburst is a true asset to Western North Carolina and sustainable aquiculture nationwide.

GAME MEATS

Before you leave, don’t forget our freezer for an eclectic selection of organic FreeBird chicken, duck, pheasant, rabbit, exotic sausages, special-order suckling pigs, and locally raised, grass fed beef and local products from most of the local producers listed above. The tender FreeBird heat-and-eat Grilled Chicken Breast Strips are the easiest meal starter for nights when you just don’t have time for the grill. Your kids (and kids at heart) are going to be more than pleased with the all-breast meat, fully cooked nuggets and sandwich patties from FreeBird, especially the ones shaped like dinosaurs!
